Desafio Del Sarnoso

As usual Summits put on an excellent race.  Challenging, beautiful and well run.  Can't say enough about what they do.

This race was a 10k race that was damn tough.  The first 4.5k was run "upstream" on a river bed.  The elevation gained 108m during that first 4.5k (150m gain in total).  The bed was mostly sandy and wet - there was a trickle of water flowing and we have had a lot of rain in the last week.  About 200m into the race there was a bottle neck.  There was boulders that had to be climbed over and it was really hard (not to mention slippery).  Someone gave me a hand and I probably spent 1 to 2 minutes there giving the people behind me a hand to help them over the boulder.  The other climbing place was probably 3km into the race - it was even harder (and for me scary).  At this point I had caught up to Jen and she gave me a hand to get up.  Carlos George stayed there giving everyone a hand till the last person came through.

After we left the river bed we ran through the desert while still climbing for another km or 2 before we began the descent down.  The last 4 km were relatively easy (downhill and non technical).  After Jen helped me up that last climb she somehow got away from me.  I could see her but gaining on her was tough.  I finally reeled her in the last km of climbing.  Can't help it but I'm competitive, I love that kid but I'm damned if I was going to lose.  We ran together the rest of the way, I'd guess 3 or 4 kilometers.  I told her if she beat me then she earned it - I wasn't going to give anything less than 100% at that point.  I was able to pull away the last km and was trying to catch the guy ahead of me but that wasn't happening.  As I write this I'm laughing - even though we both wanted to win - we stopped a couple of km from the finish to take pictures - go figure.

The scenery here was beautiful and amazing.   It's only an hour from my home - can't believe how different it is from Montereycillo.

I'm super proud of Amanda who ran and finished her first trail race.  You rock kiddo!!

Would have loved to be able to take a picture of me "holding up the boulder" - next time when it's not a race

Oh yeah, I took 3rd in the older than shit age group.
